Search Engine Optimization for Bing
3 Comments | Posted by Mr Apprentice in Search Engine Optimization
Search engine optimization for Bing is unique. Bing provides search results based on their subcategory grouping. It relies less on keywords than Google or Yahoo. Businesses and SEO services need to rethink their SEO campaigns in order to be successful. Bing separates itself from other search engines in a variety of ways. Travel, health, local, and shopping searches are very different.
Searching for travel on Bing makes me think that I am on travel website instead of a search engine. Like it or not, the self-proclaimed “Decision Engine” is changing the search engine optimization landscape forever. Some people are calling Bing an information portal or intelligent search engine. I personally think Google will remain on top but Bing should gain Microsoft an ever increasing piece of the search engine pie. This means that optimizing your website for Bing is vital to your bottom-line.
Here are some factors, which are importance when Bing optimization is concerned:
Backlinks are of less importance. If you compare the first 10 results in Bing and Google, it is noticeable that all equal, the winners in Bing have less backlinks than the winners in Google. It is unclear if nofollow matters with Bing.
Inbound anchor text matters more. The quantity of quality inbound links might be of less importance for Bing but the anchor text certainly matters more. Actually, since anchor text is one of the measurements of the quality of inbound links, it isn’t much different. Get quality anchor text and you will do well in both Bing and Google.
Link spamming won’t do much for you on Bing. Since the quantity of backinks (even if they are of supreme quality) seems to be of less importance to Bing, link spamming will be even less effective than with Google.
Bing pays more attention to the authority of the site. If this is true, this is bad news for bloggers and small sites because it means that search results are distorted in favor of older sites and/or sites of authoritative organizations. Age of domain is also very important with Bing – even more than with Google.

URL Length in SEO Practice
1 Comment | Posted by Mr Apprentice in Search Engine Optimization
The number of URL length allowable in views of SEO has been discussed seriously in forums and blog. Some suggested that maximum length of URL of targetted pages URL’s should be under 65 characters long. All depends on how the receiving SE deals with long URL. Some won’t do past 128 characters and some will do. “One size fits all” is getting out of date.
Put keywords in URL, e.g.http://www.smallpile.com/url-in-seo-practice.html, where “SEO pratice” is the keyword phrase you attempt to rank well for. But if you don’t have the keywords in other parts of the document, don’t rely on having them in the URL.
A good rule of thumb of URL SEO is to go no deeper than three directories from the root. Keep your hyphens down to 3 or fewer for the entire URL ,otherwise it will look like keyword stuffing. If you are aiming towards categorizing your content by developing these subdirectories, consider the first level of categories being a third level domain – www.mysite.com and product.mysite.com, etc. Then, you can get your first big passes at the domain level, and can limit your full URL . Also, choose your 3rd levels carefully – hyphen rules count in those, too.
